Nintendo Turned Down a Deal to Make Skylanders a Nintendo Exclusive

When Activision was making their first Skylanders game “Spyro’s Adventure”, they reportedly went to the Big N first, offering to make it a Nintendo exclusive. Nintendo executives responded by saying, “We have never seen anything like this.” but ultimately turned down the deal.

We can only speculate as to why Nintendo turned down the franchise currently valued at over 2 billion dollars. You also have to wonder if they regret it today.

Nintendo came out recently with “Pokemon Rumble U” which uses real life figures much like the Skylanders franchise. Nintendo built this NFC functionality into the Wii U (the same functionality the Skylanders portal uses). It would not be a stretch to say that Nintendo has big plans for it. Nintendo has always been a forerunner in the video game community, planning the next big thing.

Satoru Iwata (Nintendo’s CEO) may have big plans for the NFC functionality. They would not have built it into their latest console only for a small e-shop game. Maybe “Mario Party” or “Super Smash Bros” will see some NFC toys in their future.
